In 1970, at age 22 Yosef Mendelevich made news around the world with a daring attempt escape from the Soviet Union with a group of Jews on a small tourist aircraft. The KGB arrested them all before they could board the plane resulting in the infamous Leningrad Trial. He was imprisoned for 11 years in the Soviet Gulag along with dissident Natan Sharansky. When he was finally released as a result of massive international pressure and protests he immigrated to Israel and he received a hero’s welcome.
